Making and answering calls using the app

How to make a call using the app

Once you've downloaded the app and linked your phone number, you're ready to start making calls.

1. Open the app

Open the app on your smartphone, tablet, or computer and check that you’re connected to the internet.

2. Dial 18001 followed by the phone number

If you’re using a smartphone, switch from the app to your phone’s keypad. If you’re using the app on a tablet or computer, dial it on your phone.

Dial 18001 followed immediately by the full phone number of the person you want to call, including the dialling code.

3. Go back to the app

Toggle back to the app on your smartphone, tablet, or computer. If the app has timed-out while you’ve been dialling the number, press Reconnect.

Press Join to join the call.

4. Start the conversation

When the person you’re calling answers, the Relay Assistant (RA) will introduce the call and explain how the NGT service works if necessary.

The RA will then type the other person’s conversation for you to read in the app. You can either type your reply or just speak through the phone as normal.

5. Finish the call

When you’ve finished your conversation, make sure you disconnect the call on your phone and close the app on your smartphone, tablet, or computer.

Tips for making and receiving successful calls

Use the app

Whether your call is going via a Relay Assistant (RA) or the other person is typing direct, always read the conversation so you don't miss anything.

Speak or listen

If you can speak, use the phone to talk then read their reply. If you can hear but can't speak, listen on the phone and type your reply back on the app.

Try a headset

If you're using a smartphone, it might be easier to use a headset or hands-free. Just be careful with the volume on hands-free if you're in a public place as other people may be able to hear your conversation.

Watch the words

If you can speak and read at the same time, keep an eye on the app for any interruptions or words of confirmation from the hearing person.

Be natural

Make the conversation as natural as possible – it's OK to stop mid-speech to read what the hearing person says or to pause, hesitate, or laugh.

The Relay Assistant will help

If there are too many interruptions and the conversation is difficult to understand, the Relay Assistant (RA) may step in if you're having trouble controlling the call.
